The Truth about Fear...

Introduction:

Everything the Bible has to say about fear is true.

The problem is ... almost every interpretation regarding what the Bible has to say about fear is wrong

... either because it is incomplete or because it is presumptuously mis-applied.

Accurate discernment regarding fear cannot be achieved by exclusively focusing on the spiritual dimension of man

... but must be understood and evaluated by examining the entire person ... spirit ... mind ... body ... and emotions

... because this is how we were created ... and how we are judged by God.

... also keeping in mind ... not all fear is the same.

Man loves a simple quick diagnosis and easy fix ... and hates to invest the time it takes to be thorough and detailed.

Therefore, in the religious realm ... many avoid looking any further than the spirit ... to judge man's response to fear.

A common quote we hear repeated today from the opinions of men says:

"Courage is just fear that has said it's prayers and decided to go forward anyway"

... presuming that all fear is bad and must be automatically turned over to God ... stepped over ... and ignored for the sake of progress

... so today if a fearful reality happens to surface our

..."righteous"
..."courageous"
... response

is supposed to be ... to just deny that any threats or scary stuff exists

... consider it a bump in the road ... and keep going

... exercising our ... so-called ..."power of intention" to reach our self-determined spiritual goal.

Can we see that to follow this type of advice ... our faith ... attempt at finding salvation ... and our "Christian walk" must all be based on taking a careless ... giant leap into the dark

... instead of being grounded in ... and submitted to the Authority of the Word of God ... and following His specific instructions in a responsible and orderly manner.

However the Truth is ... while we may feel that some risk is involved

... at the same time

... when we step out in "faith" ... we must actually be stepping out in genuine faith (as it is actually defined

... based on clear direction from the Word of God as a result of a viable relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word)

... not just a matter of mere presumption.

Talking to God (praying) does not guarantee anything unless our prayers are also in harmony with the written Word and will of God.

In fact ... in order to follow the advice of mere humans ... to "just pray ... believe ... and leap into the dark" ... the Word, "faith," must actually be re-defined

... and removed from the close relationship it has with the Word of God.

Be warned ... that redefining is tampering

... and tampering with the Holy Word of God brings a curse.

(Rev 22:19 ... speaking of changing God's Word in the Book of Revelation

... but also referring to changing any Word of God in any of the other 65 Books as well).

* * * * * * *
As this is being written ... a very huge ... very dark storm ... is rolling in ... looming over the entire world

... of which ... very few are aware.

Of the few who do see the storm coming ... most are fearlessly thinking they are spiritually ready and physically prepared to face it

... but have really been deceived by religious romantic fables ... which have woven a spirit of presumption and false bravado into end time doctrines throughout history

... resulting in a false sense of security that will not support them ... when God's wrath actually becomes a reality ... for the multitude left behind.

Unbelievers have watched too many movies glorifying the imagined invincibility of man ... deceiving themselves into believing that when they fall ... they will always land on their feet ... no matter how far ... or how hard they fall.

And the modern "religious" have heard too many fairy tales from the pulpit causing them to become careless about spiritual ... as well as physical safety ... through false definitions regarding the truth about fear.

Therefore. . .let us begin by looking at the whole picture ... which includes ... seldom heard examples ... of valuable righteous fear:

(1st) ... Consider those named in the Scriptures ... who did "righteously fear"... in certain circumstances ... for very specific reasons.

Righteous Fear

Some who righteously feared were:

Noah
. . .feared ... warned by Word of God
. . .moved with fear to build an ark.

Abraham
. . .feared for those in Sodom.

Joseph
. . .feared Potiphar's wife and ran.

Moses' mother
. . .feared baby Moses would be killed so hid him.

Moses
. . .feared he could not speak for God.

Rahab
. . .feared her evil environment and escaped.

King David...killed the giant
. . .but feared Saul ... and ran.

Esther
. . .feared her people would be killed.

Jesus...who willingly gave His life
. . .feared to travel in certain places because of enemies.

Apostles
. . .feared the Jews and ran.

Christians...at this moment ...
. . .fearing wrath to come ... drawing close to Jesus
. . .praying to be "counted worthy to escape"
. . .being purified by the Word of God
. . .preparing for the Rapture of the Bride.

* * * * * * *
Now consider ... the (2nd) thing on which we need to focus ... that is ... God's warning to study His Word in detail for ourselves

... in order to avoid deception

... by understanding what God is really saying in His Word about fear.

(2nd)
Study is Mandatory
. . .to Avoid Deception

"Study
to shew thyself
approved unto God,
a workman
that needeth not
to be ashamed,
rightly dividing
the word of truth.

But shun
profane and vain
babblings
for they
will increase
unto more
ungodliness.

And their word
will eat
as doth a canker: ..."
-2 Tim. 2:15-17a

Ignorance of the Scriptures and the consequent hindrance to true Holy Spirit discernment

... can open the door to a wide variety of sins and deception

... especially leading one into sinfully judging and falsely accusing

... stressing

... further persecuting faithful Christians

... because without adequate study and sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit that draws the information we need ... from the Holy Bible

... it is impossible to accurately evaluate the reason and circumstances that surround another person's fear.

Someone may be obviously ... physically trembling in a fearful situation

... however ... this could be a result of the power of God upon him at that moment ... supplying the information he needs to deal with a fearful attack

... or a normal ... God-given "fight or flight" response to danger

... not because the person trembling ... is a "spiritual coward."

Also one in a group may react because he sees something fearful

... when others in the group are oblivious to it

... because they lack spiritual discernment or other vital information needed to recognize the threat.

A careless attitude and mis-handling of God's Word regarding the topic of fear ... only results in more problems

... affecting interpretation of other important doctrines as well

... bringing multiplied judgment of God upon accusers

... for putting opinions of self and others

... or man's "philosophy" (often self-righteously called "spiritual discernment")

... above Holy Spirit interpretations and true godly discernment.

The Apostle Paul warned about this very thing:

"Beware
lest any man
spoil you
through philosophy
and
vain deceit
after the tradition
of men,
after the rudiments
of the world
and
not after Christ."
-Col. 2:8

To ignorantly ... spiritually ... mis-diagnose others is more akin to divination than discernment

... also qualifying as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit ... bringing a curse for elevating one's own opinions and worldly knowledge above ...  the Holy Spirit-balanced meaning of Scripture.

Becoming engrossed in the world's perspectives

... philosophy of men

... wasting time loving things ... activities in the world

... keeping self too busy to study or care about how their erroneous judgments are going to impact the lives of others

... will be severely dealt with by Almighty God.

Instead of focusing on the assumed fearfulness of others

... better to focus on fearing the wrath of God that will be experienced by those who add more pain to the persecuted

... hindering their recovery from physical injury ... by doing the devil's work of falsely accusing the brethren

... symbolically kicking the injured ... when he is down

... when what he really needs ... is to be loved ... provided for

... encouraged to see the greater purpose, wisdom gained, and blessings that always follow a terrifying experience

... in addition to ... being nursed back to physical health ... as the good Samaritan demonstrated so well.

And I heard
a loud voice
saying in heaven,
Now is come
salvation,
and
strength,
and
the kingdom
of our God,
and
the power
of his Christ:
for the accuser
of our brethren
[The devil]
is cast down,
which accused them
before our God
day and night.

And

they overcame him
by
the blood of the Lamb,
[salvation by
the Blood of Christ]
and
by the word
of their testimony
[verbally validating
walk with Christ]
and
they loved not
their lives
unto the death.
[Willingly gave up lives
... as specifically led]
- Rev. 12:10-11

Slander and gossip aimed at a victim of trauma ... reside in the same category as murder

... because ... accusing another of being fearful and undeserving of eternal life ... destroys his spiritual credibility

... thus stealing his life ... and any influence for good he could have had in ministry ... by causing others to suspiciously avoid him.

Diligent Study of Scripture is Mandatory:

False accusations ... and unqualified "discernments" are a way of engaging in the devil's work ... to destroy the testimony of a servant of God.

When
   ...to Love Enemies

When
   ...to buy a Sword

Before we set our doctrines in concrete

... it is wise to consider the fact that in life not every thing always stays the same.

The action we take one day may not be the same action we should take the next day ... because circumstances change.

Solomon reminds us of this ... so we need to be mindful of it when interpreting the Word of God and trying to reconcile seemingly contradictory verses ... Solomon said:

"To every thing
there is a season,
and
a time
to every purpose
under the heaven:
-Eccl.3:1+3

One time Jesus said:

"But I say unto you
which hear,
Love your enemies,
do good to them
which hate you,

Bless them
that curse you,
and
pray for them
which despitefully
use you.

And unto him
that smiteth thee
on the one cheek
offer also the other
and
him that
taketh away thy cloke
forbid not
to take thy coat also."
-Luke 6:27-29

True ... Jesus said to love ... bless ... and pray for ... our enemies

... and that still applies today ... because other Scriptures verify this command.

It is true ... Jesus said to turn the other cheek

... however

... when we interpret this verse in the context of ... "a time for everything" ... we see that Jesus did not ALWAYS say this.

At a different time ... He said ... exactly the opposite.

He said:

"...When I sent you without purse,
and
scrip,
and
shoes,
lacked ye any thing?
And
they said, Nothing.

Then said he unto them,
But now
he that hath a purse,
let him take it,
and
likewise his scrip:
and
he that hath no sword,
let him sell his garment,
and
buy one."
-Luke 22:35-36

What is the reason these verses seem contradictory?

In Luke 6 ... Jesus was instructing the disciples at the beginning of His teaching ministry

... when the persecution they experienced would be moderate ... perhaps a slap on the cheek ... or at most ... a beating.

In Luke 22 ... however ... things were changing ... Judas was making plans to betray Jesus

... and the attacks they would experience after Jesus' death were going to escalate in violence

... becoming a real threat to their mission ... which was to preach the Gospel throughout the world.

* * * * * * *
Those Who Feared. . .

● Jesus "fears" being controlled:

... He feared that the people would try to force Him to fulfill His mission THEIR WAY, so He fled from them into a mountain and isolated Himself.

"When Jesus therefore perceived
that they would come
and
take him by force,
to make him a king,
he departed
again into a mountain himself alone."
- John 6:15

● Jesus "fears" death by enemies:

... Jesus' enemies wanted to kill Him ... This would have destroyed His teaching ministry

... Maybe they thought it was His time to die ... but Jesus knew that He still had work to do ... so He did not go there.

"After these things
Jesus walked in Galilee:
for he would not
walk in Jewry,
because the Jews
sought to kill him...

Then Jesus said

unto them,
My time
is not yet come:
but your time
is alway ready.

The world

cannot hate you;
but me it hateth
because
I testify of it, that
the works thereof
are evil."
- John 7:1,6,7

● Apostles "Fear" People:

"But
the multitude
of the city
was divided:
and
part held with
the Jews,
and
part with
the apostles.

And
when there was
an assault made
both of the Gentiles,
and
also of the Jews
with their rulers,
to use them despitefully,
and
to stone them,

They were ware of it,
and FLED
unto Lystra and Derbe,
cities of Lycaonia,
and
unto the region
that lieth round about:"
Acts 14:4-6

The apostles fled ... ran for their lives from their attackers.

... Saving
    ... and
         ... Losing Life

Then said Jesus
unto his disciples,
If any man will
come after me,
let him deny himself,
and
take up his cross,
and
follow me.

For whosoever

will save his life
shall lose it:
and
whosoever
will lose his life
for my sake
shall find it.

For what is a man profited,
if
he shall gain
the whole world,
and
lose his own soul?
or
what shall a man give
in exchange
for his soul?
-Matt. 16:24-25

"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it:"

... CANNOT be applied to those who run

... or defend themselves from a physical attack.

In its total context

... this passage is referring to those who reject Christ

... thinking they can somehow save themselves

... attempting to create the sort of life they desire ... through their own efforts

... instead of rejecting

... turning from their own worldly  desires and ambitions

... in order to serve Christ.

Jesus is reminding them that this life on Earth is not all there is ... life is eternal.

Only those who lose their life ... (worldly self-centered life)

... by submitting to the authority of Christ and Word of God

... will be eternally saved.

* * * * * * *
Who are
   ... the real
        ..."fearful?"

"But the FEARFUL,
and unbelieving
and the abominable,
and murderers,
and whoremongers,
and sorcerers,
and idolaters,
and all liars,
shall have their part
in the lake
which burneth with
fire and brimstone:
which is
the second death."
-Rev.21:8

"FEARFUL"
[G1169]
= timid because of
    .. dread
= faithless
= one who denies
    .. rejects Christ

"UNBELIEVING"
[G571]
faithless
= one who denies
    .. rejects Christ

The fearful and unbelieving are tied together in the Greek with the same definition ... indicating that they are one in the same.

The fearful ones are the "faithless"...  unbelievers ... who "dread."

They are cowards ... fearful when it comes to facing God

... because they are without faith ... there isn't any Spirit of the Word of God in them ... they have denied ... rejected the Authority of Christ and God's written Word.

This was evidenced recently when searching for images to include with text ... One picture had writing which boldly stated:

"I follow Jesus ... not the Bible."  These are not the believers.

The fearful are those who may even know about Jesus ... but have rejected the Authority of Christ and the Word of God ... dreading the judgment ... They are the un-believers.

Revelation 21:8 ... cannot be carelessly ... or heartlessly ... applied to believers who love Christ but have been traumatized through persecution.

To use their trauma to falsely accuse them of being unbelievers ... is a spiritual crime that has the power to destroy their testimony and their life.

If a true believer should be persecuted ... or even die for his faith in Christ ... God will specifically provide all he needs to do that ... including the information regarding ... whether to stand or whether to run.

It is a serious sin to use this verse to further persecute the persecuted because he responds to a threat with the normal reflexes ... with which he was created.

There is a whole lot more to consider.

... One thing to keep in mind from the totality of experiences from the Scriptures is:

... sometimes we stay and turn the other cheek

... sometimes we run

... and ...

... sometimes we fight:

... sometimes with the Sword of the Word

... and sometimes with a sword of steel.

There was a point when Jesus told the disciples to sell their coat/"garment" (in those days a necessity for health and comfort)

... and buy a sword ... if they didn't have one ... for self defense.

Love Casts Out Fear

1 John 4:16-19:

The Apostle John, "the Beloved" ... the one Jesus distinguishes as the "expert" regarding "love"

... writes to the Church concerning how God expects them to be identified with a unique type of love

... love for God
... love for one another
... love for the lost

The first part of this chapter is a warning about the need to discern the spiritual condition of others

... because the antichrist spirit is already there ... trying to infiltrate the Church.

For this reason ... John is outlining the criteria by which believers are to discern the genuine from the false.

His basic instruction is:

"You will know genuine believers by their (genuine) love."

*However* ... In verse 17
    ... the topic changes ...

. . .from the importance of discerning those who have genuine love for God and others

. . .to how love for God will take away fear at the time of judgment

... and now correctly defines the type of "fear" to which this passage is referring:

"fear"
[G5401]
= reverence for God
    .. (foremost)
= terror
   .. (exists but secondary
        reaction)
= picture of fearful
   soldiers at tomb at time
   of Jesus' resurrection

This picture of the soldiers at the tomb provides a fitting example of the sequence that takes place in this type of fear:

... first ... they find themselves in the unmistakable presence of Almighty God.

... second ... then they are terrified by that realization.
(Matt. 27:54)

1 John 4:16-19:

And
we have known
and
believed the love
that God hath to us.
God is love;
and
he that
dwelleth in love
dwelleth in God
and
God in him.
v.16

Because God is love ... when a genuine believer is indwelt by the Spirit of God ... he also has access to God's unique type of love.

Herein is our love

made perfect,
that we may have boldness
in the day
of judgment
because
as he is,
so are we
[perfect in love]
in this world.
v.17

It is because of the indwelling of the Spirit of God that we can access this "perfect" type of love

... for the purpose of having confidence ... boldness

... when judgment day comes.

There is no fear
in love;
but
perfect love
casteth out fear:
because
fear hath torment
He that feareth
is not made
perfect in love.
v.18

"torment"
[G2851]
= correction
= punishment .. penalty
= judgment
= wrath of God

This type of "torment" being spoken of ... is the pain that comes from the reality of future punishment

... or thought of torment

... or suffering that is coming as a result of fearing ... dreading the wrath of God

... because one does not possess the perfect love provided by the Word and indwelling of the Spirit

... because one is not actually "born-again" of the Spirit

... so fails the "love test" the Apostle John has just presented in the previous verses

... describing the type of fear that exists when "conversion" is not genuine.

To understand the Truth about fear ... we must hang onto God's established definition of "perfect"

... being the unique ... Spirit of love that is "made" available to genuine believers.

Those who are not genuine believers

... do not have access to this type of love for God

... therefore do not have the Spirit of God

... therefore on judgment day (G2920 = day of separation)

... they will experience great fear.

Even now they fear the judgment that is coming

... and do not want to talk about it

... even though often spiritually dressing themselves in a cloak of false security

... courageous religious platitudes

... and emotional bravado.

We love him, because he first loved us.
(1 John 4:16-19)

The love genuine believers have for Christ is a response to His love for them

... because they value the price He paid with His Blood

... for their salvation.

AMEN !! ... We may become traumatized ... and even run for our lives from danger

... but when we stand before Jesus in the end

... we will not fear His wrath or judgment because we have the guarantee and reality of His Spirit dwelling in us

... making His type of supernatural love perfect in us ... knowing we are loved by Him

... being able to love Him and others

... assured that we are genuine

... all because ... He first loved us and gave Himself for us

... so we can be prepared and have no fear of seeing our beloved Redeemer on that day.
