Abraham's Heart..and..God's Wrath

Genesis
Chapter 18

Before Destruction
   ... God Visits
       ... the Righteous

v.1
"And the LORD
appeared unto him
[Abraham]
in the plains
of Mamre
and he sat
in the tent door
in the heat
of the day; ..."

"Mamre"
[H4471]
= place of nourishment
= for "strength".. vigour

Abraham was sitting in a place of "strength" in the plains of "Mamre"

... positioned in spiritual ... as well as physical ... strength.

It was not his own strength that had brought him to Mamre.

... It was all God's doing ... for we are told in Hebrews 11:8 ... that Abraham was a man of faith

... He had been thoroughly nourished by the Word of God.

Therefore ... we can also assume that it was not uncommon for Abraham to commune with God in his tent ... in the heat of the day.

... HOWEVER ... there was something very different about this particular "visit" with the Lord ... on this particular day.

v.2
"And he
lift up his eyes
and
looked,
and, lo,
three men
stood by him:
and
when he saw them,
he ran
to meet them
from the tent door,
and
bowed himself
toward the ground, ..."

Interesting ... Abraham is visited by "three" men ... reminding us of the Godhead

...then bowing and referring to this Visitor(s) addressing (T)Him as, "My Lord."

v.3
"And said, My Lord,
if now I have found
favour in thy sight,
pass not away,
I pray thee
from thy servant:
v.4
Let a little water,
I pray you,
be fetched,
and
wash your feet
and
rest yourselves
under the tree:
v.5
And
I will fetch
a 'morsel of bread'
and
comfort ye
your hearts
after that
ye shall pass on:
for therefore
are ye come
to your servant.
And they said,
So do, as thou
hast said."

Abraham is definitely being blessed by this visit.

... He begs his Lord to ... please stay ... offers to provide Him with some water to wash His feet ... inviting Him to rest under his tree

... offering to bring a little bit of bread ... so they can find comfort and be refreshed from their journey.

But ... then ... Abraham's next remark reveals some presumption

... He presumes that the entire purpose of their visit is to find comfort and refreshment

...or... is Abraham actually ... very politely asking them if there could be more to this visit?

... a visit that already holds a very unusual blessing.

If these visitors have more on their mind at this point ... they aren't telling.

... So Abraham just continues serving them ... content with being blessed with their company and their willingness to stay.

In any case ... Abraham's "morsel of bread" ... suddenly turns into a huge banquet

...perhaps another maneuver to enjoy their presence and fellowship a little longer.

v.6
And
Abraham hastened
into the tent
unto Sarah,
and said,
Make ready quickly
three measures
of fine meal,
knead it,
and make cakes
upon the hearth.
v.7
And
Abraham ran
unto the herd,
and
fetcht a calf
tender and good,
and
gave it unto
a young man;
and
he hasted to dress it.
v.8
And
he took butter,
and milk
and
the calf
which he had dressed,
and
set it before them;
and
he stood by them
under the tree,
and
they did eat."

Abraham has just spent a lot of time and effort to make his Visitors/Lord welcome in his home.

... Will he be rewarded with some vital information now?

... We will see.

* * * * *
God Informs
   ... Righteous Servants

v.16
And
the men rose up
from thence,
and
looked toward Sodom,
and
Abraham
went with them
to bring them
on the way.

When the men/"his Lord" rose up to head toward Sodom ... Abraham walked with them.

Abraham proved to be a worthy servant.

Apparently his joy in serving his Lord ... gave him the privilege of walking with them.

Maybe Abraham thought he was showing them the way

... but if this "Visitor" is ... Who we think He is ... They surely could have found Sodom on their own

... In fact ... when the men "rose up"... they were already looking "toward Sodom."

v.17
And
the LORD said,
Shall I hide from Abraham
that thing
which I do

The Lord considers whether to reveal His plans to Abraham ... or to hide this information from him.

In making this consideration ... the Lord takes a close look at the character of Abraham

... and reviews all of the plans He has made for Him:

v.18
Seeing that Abraham
shall surely become
a great
and
mighty nation
and
all the nations
of the earth
shall be
blessed in him?

(1)..The Lord has big plans for Abraham

... He intends that all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him.

These plans seem to be a directly linked

... determining factor

... regarding the type of information the Lord will entrust to Abraham.

v.19
For I know him,
that he will command
his children
and
his household
after him,
and
they shall keep
the way of the LORD
to do justice
and
judgment
that the LORD
may bring
upon Abraham
that which
he hath spoken
of him.

"justice"
[H6666]
right
= morally virtuous

[H6663]
just
clear .. cleanse

"judgment"
[H4941]
right in legal sense
= lawful
= proper

[H8199]
= judge .. legal
   .. right and wrong

(2)..The Lord already knows everything about Abraham.

He knows that Abraham will make certain his family keeps the "way"... Word of the Lord

...and that they will do what is ..."justice" and "judgment"... according to the will of the Lord.

... Abraham will be faithful in commanding ... and instructing his family

... so they will do what is morally clean ... right
... proper ... and lawful before God.

God is thee Preeminent God ... His hallmark is to reveal to His servants ... the events that will take place in the future.

He does not give this important information to everyone.

... only to the servants He can trust to obey His will

... servants like the Apostle John ... who was called to share end time information with the other trustworthy servants of God:

The Revelation
of
Jesus Christ,
which God gave
unto him,
to shew
unto his servants
things
which must
shortly
come to pass
and
he sent and signified it
by
his angel
unto
his servant John:
-Rev.1:1

Now I tell you
before it come
that,
when it is
come to pass
ye may believe
that I am he.
-John 13:19

God Warns
   ... the Righteous
       ... of Wrath
           ... to Come
v.20
And
the LORD said,
Because
the cry of
Sodom
and
Gomorrah
is great,
and because
their sin
is very grievous;

"Cry"
[H2201]
= outcry .. clamour

"grievous"
[H3513]
= heavy .. burdensome

Something is very wrong in Sodom and Gomorrah.

The sounds coming out of these places are not normal.

Perhaps they are very vexing sounds of misery ... the sounds of extremely dark places ... so deeply burdened with sin ... they have become void of the knowledge and love of God

...and are now only able to experience the pain and suffering that accompanies the final stages of man's deadly spiritual disease

... called "sin."

While men build towers to achieve powers ... in reality ... they are spiraling downward on the wide road that leads to destruction.

The only direction they are going is backwards ... de-volving

...such is the nature of sin

... It is an increasingly eroding process ... that ends in personal death

... as well as the death of a civilization.

At this point ... a loving God must step in to stop the cancer of sin from totally destroying all He has created ... and intended to use ... to bless mankind.

v.21
I will go down now,
and see
whether they
have done altogether
according to
the cry of it,
which is come unto me;
and
if not, I will know.

The Lord confirms the reason for His visit.

God has come to evaluate the situation

... and ... in doing so

...has chosen Abraham to be a witness for humanity.

God Willing
   ... to Extend Mercy
       ... on Behalf
           ... of the Righteous

v.22
And the men
turned their faces
from thence,
and
went toward Sodom
but
Abraham stood yet
before the LORD.

Here is a mystery ... How can the "men"/"Lord" go toward Sodom and yet the "Lord" remain behind with Abraham?"

Simple answer ... God can do anything ... He certainly is able to be in many places at the same time.

v.23
And
Abraham drew near,
and said,
Wilt thou also
destroy the righteous
with the wicked?

The Spirit of God stayed with Abraham ... knowing he was being called to be an advocate for the righteous

.. and ..

for the purpose of establishing the fact that

... it is not in God's nature

... to pour out His wrath on the righteous

..or..

include them in the punishment of the wicked.

Abraham begins to bargain with the Lord:

v.24
Peradventure
there be fifty righteous
within the city:
wilt thou also destroy
and
not spare the place
for the fifty righteous
that are therein?
v.25
That be far from thee
to do after this manner,
to slay the righteous
with the wicked:
and
that the righteous
should be as the wicked,
that be far from thee
Shall not the Judge
of all the earth
do right?

God is clearly using Abraham's discourse to establish the workings of God's heart for the record

... validating His great mercy and perfect justice.

Abraham is a man of faith ... he has walked with God ... he has experienced God's personal involvement in his own life.

He knows that God is consistent with His own Word and nature

... Therefore ... Abraham has confidence in knowing that it is "far from thee"

... totally outside of God's nature

...to include the righteous with the wicked

... when He pours out His wrath.

So Abraham continues to bargain for the lives of the righteous ... to the point of exhaustion:

v.26
And
the LORD said,
If I find in Sodom
fifty righteous
within the city,
then I will spare
all the place
for their sakes.
v.27
And
Abraham answered
and said,
Behold now,
I have taken upon me
to speak unto the Lord,
which am but
dust and ashes:
v.28
Peradventure
there shall lack five
of the fifty righteous:
wilt thou destroy
all the city
for lack of five?
And he said,
If I find there
forty and five,
I will not destroy it.
v.29
And he spake
unto him yet again,
and said,
Peradventure
there shall be forty
found there.
And he said,
I will not do it
for forty's sake.
v.30
And he said unto him,
Oh let not
the Lord be angry,
and I will speak:
Peradventure
there shall thirty
be found there.
And he said,
I will not do it,
if I find thirty there.
v.31
And he said, Behold now,
I have taken upon me
to speak unto the Lord:
Peradventure
there shall be twenty
found there.
And he said,
I will not destroy it
for twenty's sake.
v.32
And he said,
Oh let not
the Lord be angry,
and I will speak
yet but this once:
Peradventure
ten shall be
found there.
And he said,
I will not destroy it
for ten's sake.

v.33
And the LORD
went his way
as soon as
he had left communing
with Abraham:
and Abraham
returned unto his place.

... HOWEVER ... while the Lord could not find ten righteous

... And symbolically ... God's limit had been reached.

... NEVERTHELESS ... God remained consistent with His Word and nature

... and did not pour out His wrath on even three righteous.

... BUT ... instead

... REMOVED them
... BEFORE destruction.

Ps.119..ALEPH..Blessed by Harmonizing Hearts

~ Section ~
One
"ALEPH"

"ALEPH"

Means:
Lord..Master..Truth

Introduction:

Because "ALEPH"... in the Hebrew, means:
            "Ox"..."Yoke"

... giving us a picture of being led ... walking in harmony with

... submitted to thee ..."Lord"
..."Master"
..."Truth"

... it is only fitting ... according to our Father's ultimate list of priorities to title this first Section of
Psalm 119:

"ALEPH."

The first step of salvation is ... in fact ..."ALEPH"... an awakening to the reality ... of the existence of the eternal God

... and our subsequent need to acknowledge Him as Creator ... Lord ... and Master

...coming to grips with our own mortality and becoming willing to submit to His Preeminent Authority.

Blessed
by
Walking
in Harmony
with
God's Word
and
His Heart
v.1
Blessed
are the undefiled
in the way
who walk
in the law
of the LORD.

The paramount questions in this verse are:

(1).."What does it really mean to be 'blessed'."

(2).."Do we really want to be "blessed?"

"Blessed"
[H835]
= true happiness

[H833]
= to be advanced
= benefited by
= improved

Sadly ... humans tend to look in all the wrong places for happiness

... but forget ... that the One who created us ... knows best ... what really is best for us

... so they do not see the ultimately painful cost of going their own way ... a way that is not pure ... a "defiled" way.

... So they "walk"... live ... contrary to God's law ... contrary to His rules for a successful and happy life.

Unfortunately most people prefer to be spontaneous ... and careless about their eternal destiny ... making self the "god" of their life

... instead of embracing the pro-active spiritual preparations found in the Wisdom of God's rules of life ... found in His Holy Word.

This will eventually rob them of every good thing in this life ... as well as their eternal life.

"undefiled"
[H8549]
= complete .. whole
= wholesome
= healthy
pure .. with integrity

"defiled"
[H2930]
= unclean .. foul
= profane .. polluted
= sinful

**A warning to those who bicker about how much a person can sin

... and ...

still claim salvation:

The sins that would keep a person out of Heaven ... are not the favorite sins in which one would indulge one's self

... but it is the underlying sin for which he will be judged.

... The sin that keeps a person out of Heaven is the careless ... sinful attitude toward sin

... evidenced by the time spent ... and focus on ... defending one's "right" to sin ... and still be saved

...which is really the underlying sin ... revealing an unchanged heart

...placing such a person in the group God calls:

... the "presumptuous and selfwilled"

... not inheriting the Kingdom ... ignoring the cost Christ paid ... to be able to offer us eternal life

... minimizing the humiliation and suffering Christ endured to save us from our sin ... as He was shedding His precious Blood on the cross

...thinking of us ... suffering because He knew He was the only One who could secure a loving relationship with us

... to guarantee everlasting life for us ... blessing us with the priceless gift of salvation ... and the privilege of ruling and reigning with Him forever.
v.9
"The Lord knoweth
how to deliver
the godly
out of
temptations,
and
to reserve
the unjust
unto the day
of judgment
to be
punished:
v.10
But chiefly them
that walk after
[live for]
the flesh
in the lust
of
uncleanness
[sin]
and
despise government
[God's law .. Word]
Presumptuous
are they,
selfwilled
they are
not afraid
to speak evil
of
dignities
-2 Peter 2:9-10

Once we belong to Jesus Christ ...  we are no longer in bondage ... no longer a slave to sin.

The Epistles abound with this assurance we have in Christ ... confirming that God has provided everything we need to overcome the world ... the flesh ... and the devil.

"The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations"

... while reserving the unjust for the day of judgment

...and He is happy to share that information with us

... if we desire to be godly ... and will carefully follow the instructions He has provided in His Word.

However ... the unjust will surely be punished on the day of judgment ... because they "walk after"... they follow the dictates of their own hearts

... distancing themselves from the desire of God's Heart.

...They "despise government"... hate the authority of the Word ... and Law of God

"... Presumptuous are they ... selfwilled ..."

[never seeing the seriousness of sin ... never fully repentant ... still the god of their own life

...not acknowledging verse 9 ... that verifies God's provision to overcome sin ... and mature through the power of His Word]

"... they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities."

"dignities"
[G1391]
= God's power and glory
= things of God
= Word of God

v.2
Blessed are they
that keep
his testimonies
and
that seek him
with
the whole heart.

Being eternally "blessed" is not an option ... if we desire to have a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ.

... Either we desire to be blessed by having a relationship with Him ... according to ... and submitted to ... the Authority of the Word of God or we don't.

The question .. again .. is:

"Do we want to be blessed?"

... (according to our own will and our own perceived "authority"

... and according to our own terms

... or according to God's Word and will ... Authority ... and terms?)

... Genuine salvation will always depend on the condition of our heart

... and whether it is actually harmonizing with the heart of God

... (which He has taken great care in revealing and preserving in His Word)

... Our salvation does not merely depend on what we say ... for it is what we actually do ... that reveals the true condition of our heart.

Are we really

... sincerely seeking God ... with our "whole heart?" ♡

This is the vital question ... we need to be asking ... at this late hour.

v.3
They also
do no iniquity
they walk
in his ways.

While no works are required to be saved

... and it is impossible to save ourselves ... there is something God does expect us to do once we are saved

... once we sincerely appreciate the value of all He has done for us.

He expects us to "walk in His ways."

... Why? ...

Because those who walk in His ways ... according to His Word

... are the same ones who also ..."do no iniquity"

...same ones who do not want to sin.

God is not saying that it is possible to reach a place of "sinless perfection"

... but that there is a Way to overcome
... avoid sin
... grow in grace
... mature
... as an "Elder"
(if you will)

... who will ... one day ... be among those who fall down ... worship ... and cast crowns before Him. (Rev.4).

v.4
Thou hast
commanded us
to keep
thy precepts
diligently.

For those ... whose hearts beat in harmony with the Father's Heart ... commandments of God are neither "nailed to the cross"... nor ..."only for Old Testament Israel"

... but are respected as a valuable means of guiding us down the narrow road in life ... keeping us from the many pitfalls of the world ... the flesh ... and the devil.

John Bunyan described this amazing journey in detail as he wrote "The Pilgrims Progress."

One thing about a finely tuned harmonious heart ... it is also a well-balanced heart ... and for that to exist ... we need Jesus ..."thee" Word of God saying:

"A new
commandment
I give unto you
That ye
love
one another;
as I have
loved you
that ye also
love one another
-John 13:34

Then the Beloved Apostle ... John ... makes sure that we remember what Jesus said about this topic of keeping "commandments" ... when he reminded us:
"Brethren,
I write
no new
commandment
unto you,
but an
old
commandment
[Old Testament commandment]
which ye had
from
the beginning.
The old
commandment
is the word
which ye have heard
from
the beginning..."
-1 John 2:7

John is speaking of the higher law of love that Jesus established in John 13:34
(see above verse)

... which embodies the totality of the Word

... whether found in the
Old ... or ... New Testament.

... For if we love

... we will not steal
... we will not murder
... we will not commit
    adultery
... etc., etc.
v.14
"But continue thou
in the things
which thou
hast learned
and
hast been
assured of,
knowing of whom
[Jesus]
thou hast learned them;
v.15
And
that from a child
thou hast known
the holy scriptures
which are able
to make thee
wise unto salvation
through faith
which is in
Christ Jesus.
v.16
All scripture
is given
by inspiration
of God
and
is profitable
for doctrine
for reproof
for correction,
for instruction
in righteousness:
v.17
That the man of God
may be perfect
throughly furnished
unto all
good works.
-2 Timothy 3:14-17

"All Scripture"
= the totality of the Word
   of God
both Old and New
   Testaments ... perfectly
    ... balanced together

... are sufficient to completely prepare believers with:

(1)..doctrine
     ..God's laws of life
        and conduct
(2)..reproof
     ..warnings
(3)..correction
     ..what not to do
(4)..instruction
     ..in righteousness
     ..how to do what
       is right

... for the purpose of being ready to do whatever work God calls us to.

Our Heart's Desire
    ... To Be
       ... An "Overcomer"

v.5
O that my ways
were directed
to keep
thy statutes!
[Word/Commandments]

Once we understand what it means to be blessed with all God is offering us

... our heart's desire will be ... to yield to the Spirit and power of the Word of God

... so we might keep ... walk in harmony with ...  His Word.

v.6
Then shall I
not be ashamed
when I have
respect unto all
thy commandments.

Fear of being "ashamed" at His appearing should be a deterrent to sin:

"ashamed"
[H954]
= disappointed
   .. in one's self
= regret
= embarrassed
= humiliated

If we "respect" all of His commandments ... we will not be ashamed:

"respect"
[H5027]
= pay attention to
= keep looking at .. study
= see the value in

Our confidence before God and man comes as a result of our "respect" for every commandment God has so graciously given to us for our ultimate benefit.

v.7
I will praise thee
with uprightness
of heart
when I shall
have learned
thy righteous
judgments.

When we have confidence before God and man

... and have studied His righteous "judgments":

"judgments"
[H4941]
= God's laws
= How God discerns right     ..from wrong

... then we will be able to praise God confidently

... with all of our heart.

v.8
I will keep
thy statutes
O forsake me
not utterly.

The psalmist understands the blessings ... benefits ... and amazing value of God's laws.

Therefore ... he longs to be able to keep God's statutes
= commandments
= Word of God

... and prays that God will not forsake him ... because he understands that the ability to keep God's Word ... can only be provided by God.

In uttering this most heart-felt prayer ... King David leads us in prayer as well.
